Capturing Family Memories: Why Photos With Little Kids Matter & How To Stay Calm When They Don’t Listen:
I had the honour of capturing the Peters family in Waterloo, Ontario while they were in town before heading back home. The girls were absolutely amazing during the shoot, full of energy and personality. But I could tell that mom was feeling a little anxious—worried that at any moment, the girls might stop listening or start to get fussy. As a mom of three little ones myself (who are actually the same ages as the Peters’ girls!), I completely understood that feeling. Family photoshoots with young children can be a mix of joy and stress, but they’re also full of moments that are worth capturing.
That’s why I wanted to share a different perspective on this topic—some tips to help both parents and photographers stay calm, relaxed, and open to whatever comes our way during a shoot. The truth is, those "uncooperative" moments often turn out to be the most genuine and beautiful parts of the photoshoot!
1. Shift Your Focus from Perfection to Connection
When it comes to family photos with little ones, it’s easy to get caught up in the idea of getting the “perfect” shot: everyone smiling, sitting still, looking directly at the camera. But the truth is, kids are unpredictable, and the best photos often happen when you let go of perfection and focus on the connection between you and your children. Laugh, play, and just be in the moment with them. Those unscripted, candid shots where everyone is just enjoying each other’s company are usually the ones that truly reflect the essence of your family.
2. Be Flexible and Go With the Flow
If your kids aren’t listening or aren’t in the mood to pose, it’s okay! Flexibility is key. Give them space to roam around, explore, or just have fun. Sometimes, the best photos come when you’re not trying to get a certain “look,” but rather when you’re letting them be themselves. Whether it’s running along the beach, having a tickle fight, or simply holding hands, these little moments are what make family photos so meaningful.
And if you feel like they’re losing interest, take a break and try something different. A change of pace, like a fun activity or a game, can reignite their excitement and bring out those natural smiles.
3. Don’t Worry About “Listening” — Embrace the Chaos
As a mom, I know it can be frustrating when your kids don’t listen to instructions, especially when you’re hoping for that picture-perfect moment. But honestly? The more you try to control the situation, the more it can feel stressful for everyone involved. Instead, embrace the chaos! The playful energy, the unexpected moments, and even the occasional tantrum are part of what makes family photography with little ones so special. Sometimes, the moments when your child is not listening end up being the most honest and fun photos—capturing the true personality of your kids at that moment in time.
And remember, you’re not alone in this. As a fellow mom, I know how challenging it can be, but those moments you think won’t work out are often the ones that create the most heartfelt and lasting memories.
Final Thoughts: Why These Photos Matter
At the end of the day, family photos are about more than just looking perfect—they’re about creating a story of your life as a family at this particular time. Whether your kids are posing perfectly or running wild, every photo tells a story of love, laughter, and the beauty of being together. So, don’t stress if your little ones aren’t being “perfect”—the real magic happens when you let go, embrace the moment, and focus on the love you share.
