From Scarborough Bluffs To Your Best Shots : A Guide To Beach Photos With Your Loved One.
A Little Brag (and a Whole Lot of Love)
I’ve had the absolute privilege of photographing this incredible couple for the past three years, and let me tell you, their love just keeps growing stronger. Watching them together, sharing in their joy, and capturing those authentic moments—it’s truly an honor. So when they asked me to photograph them again, this time at Scarborough Bluffs, I was over the moon. If you’ve never been, it’s a stunning spot just outside Toronto with sweeping views of the lake and dramatic cliffs.
On the day of the shoot, the beach was quiet, and we had a mix of perfect golden light and moody, overcast skies—making for some absolutely gorgeous photos. It got me thinking about how important it is to not just show up for a photoshoot but to be present and make the most of it. The goal isn’t just to snap some pictures; it's to create an experience that leaves you with beautiful memories—and photos you can cherish forever.
So, whether it’s your first session or your tenth, here are a few tips that will help you make the most of your photoshoot and get those jaw-dropping shots you’ll love:
1. Dress for the Setting (But Keep It Comfortable!)
When it comes to beach photos, it’s all about striking a balance between looking great and feeling comfortable. You want to choose outfits that complement each other and the natural beauty of the beach without making you feel stiff or out of place. Light, airy fabrics (think flowing dresses, linen shirts, or relaxed pants) work well because they move beautifully in the breeze and add a sense of flow to your photos.
Colors that complement the natural tones of the beach are always a win—soft neutrals, pastels, or even deep blues and greens that echo the sky and water. Avoid overly bright or busy patterns, as they can clash with the setting and distract from you both. And if you're planning to go barefoot (which I highly recommend for a more natural, carefree vibe), make sure your feet are comfortable in the sand!
2. Play with Movement and Natural Moments
One of the most magical things about beach photoshoots is the natural movement that the setting brings—whether it's the wind in your hair, the waves crashing on the shore, or the feeling of being close to your partner. Don’t be afraid to embrace it! Take a walk along the shore hand-in-hand, laugh together, or run through the surf. Those candid, in-between moments often create the most genuine and memorable images.
If you’re feeling more playful, twirl your partner, spin around, or jump in the water for a fun splash! These spontaneous, action-filled shots will create movement and energy in your photos, making them feel lively and authentic.
3. Set the Mood with Connection & Intimacy
The best beach photos capture the connection between you and your partner. Instead of posing rigidly, focus on the moments where you can just be together. Snuggle up, whisper something sweet in each other’s ear, or share a laugh. A gentle touch, a soft gaze, or a shared moment of quiet intimacy can speak volumes.
Sometimes, I encourage couples to take a few seconds to breathe and relax before we start snapping pictures—just focus on each other, enjoy the sound of the waves, and forget about the camera. The more you tune into each other, the more the love and connection will shine through in the photos.
At the end of the day, a photoshoot at the beach is about more than just getting the perfect shot—it's about capturing the feeling of being together in such a beautiful, timeless setting. By choosing the right outfits, embracing natural movement, and truly connecting with each other, you’ll end up with photos that not only look amazing but also reflect the love and joy you share.
So whether you're celebrating an anniversary, marking a special moment, or just spending a fun day at the beach together, remember to enjoy the process. The best photos come when you're having fun, being yourselves, and letting the magic of the moment take over. I’m beyond grateful to have witnessed so many beautiful memories like this, and I can’t wait to help more couples create their own!
